TIPS TO ENHANCE OR EXTEND THIS LESSON

Have students create drawings that reflect their 55-word stories. Remind them that there are no right or wrong answers to this assignment—merely personal expressions of creativity.

Complete this activity in relation to an upcoming holiday (e.g., Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving). Connecting nanofiction creations to that holiday can inspire creativity and jumpstart writing, especially for younger students who may struggle with topic selection.

For a new twist on the old theme of “what I did on my summer vacation,” ask your students to compose a 55-word short story on what they wish they had done during their summer break. This is a great way to welcome students back to a new school year.

Steve Moss, the editor of a California-based newspaper, New Times, has conducted a 55-word fiction contest for many years. Declaring each January 2nd “55 Fiction Day,” he invites people of all ages to compose 55-word essays and send them to him. To get more information on this contest, as well as to read some entries from previous years, visit http://worddays.net/January-2-55-fiction-day.
